John Pennington is a seasoned attorney with a focus on investment funds, corporate and business law, real estate, securities and compliance. He brings over a decade of legal experience and is licensed to practice law in both New York and Utah.
Most recently, Mr. Pennington served as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis, one of the world’s most prestigious law firms. In this role, he provided exceptional legal services to investment funds engaged in capital raises ranging from $100 million to $6.5 billion. His deep expertise in fund formation, securities, and business law made him a trusted advisor, ensuring successful outcomes for his clients.
Prior to his time at Kirkland & Ellis, Mr. Pennington held the position of Chief Compliance Officer at Sundance Bay, a highly successful private equity firm with a remarkable track record of investments exceeding $700 million since inception. In this role, he spearheaded the registration of the firm as a Registered Investment Advisor with the SEC, navigated complex compliance and regulatory matters, and ensured the firm’s operations aligned with industry standards and regulations.
Mr. Pennington began his legal career at Bridge Investment Group (NYSE: BRDG), a widely recognized real estate investment group with currently over $48 billion AUM. As an associate counsel at the firm, he gained valuable insights into fund management and real estate law, laying the foundation for his future success.
Mr. Pennington holds a Juris Doctor degree from Arizona State University – Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian Studies from Brigham Young University. Furthermore, he is a holder of the Series 65 license. His educational background, combined with his extensive legal experience, equips him with a comprehensive understanding of the law and its application in various practice areas.
